Our Programs

Clean, Green & Renewable Energy

We’re working to urge campuses, cities and our state to lead the way to 100% renewable power, make strong commitments to solar and harness the abundant wind power off the Atlantic coast.
In a greener, healthier world, we would conserve more, use the energy we have more wisely and efficiently, and rely only on sources of energy that are clean, renewable and tread lightly on the planet.
The question is, what concrete steps can we take to move closer to the world we want to live in? And given the current administration’s myopic preference for older, dirtier energy sources, where can we realistically take those steps right now?
100% Renewable, Go Solar, Go Big on Offshore Wind

Through our Clean, Green & Renewable program, Environment Maryland is working alongside our network of 29 state environment groups and our members and activists in all 50 states to run three campaigns:

100% Renewable:  The shift toward clean, renewable power starts locally. We’re asking states, local governments and college campuses to aim high to meet all their energy needs with solar, wind and other renewable resources.

Go Solar: Smart public policies have driven the remarkable growth of solar power in states and cities all over the country. We’re working to promote and defend the future of solar, state by state and city by city.

Go Big on Offshore Wind: The winds that blow off our Atlantic Coast could provide enough electricity to meet the energy needs of the entire East Coast.. We're asking Maryland's leaders to harness the wind that blows off our shores.

The Cleanest Energy-Conservation and Efficiency: The cleanest energy we have is the energy we never need in the first place. Reducing energy use creates big savings—for our planet, our climate and our health. We’re working to get states to adopt strong energy efficiency programs."

The Environment Maryland approach

Each of these campaigns aims to accelerate our country’s shift to clean energy in unique ways. But they share a common approach. Each campaign strives to:

Put the environment first. A clean environment is not a by-product of American prosperity. Rather, a clean environment is the necessary precondition for true prosperity. Through our research and public education, we’re working to shift more hearts and minds over to this point of view.

Take a strategic approach. We must think big and act boldly, but progress comes one step at a time. We don’t make broad statements; instead, we work to protect the American landscape and make a difference in American lives by building support for specific shifts in public policy.

Build on what works. Our national network has won policies that have resulted in more solar and wind power, cleaner air, and reduced global warming pollution in 25 states. We know which policies work, how they can be improved, and what it takes to win their approval. As always, we’re also open to new ideas that work even better.

Work together. We endeavor to unite people from all across the political spectrum around clean, renewable energy, whether they are farmers who benefit from wind turbines on their land or Baltimore families who want to store and share the solar energy generated on their rooftops. Our advocates in Washington, D.C., work with members of Congress from both parties. Our advocates in the Maryland build coalitions that include business owners, doctors and nurses, religious leaders and people from all walks of life. Our organizers and canvassers engage thousands of our members and activists across the state

Act now

All of us should do what we can in our own homes to conserve, use energy more efficiently, and promote solar and wind power. But with a problem this big, of course we need to do more.
